Started Hometown Harvest: June 1, 2009 (Founders)

Favorite Hometown Harvest product: Of course we like it all! We do get particularly excited for asparagus in the spring, blueberries in June, peaches in July, and the yellow watermelons in August.

Best story while at work: A story that stands out happened over lunch last year. Sitting down with Matt and Mary Harsh, one of our farming families, we started talking about Abby and I looking for a farm, so that we could grow some crops ourselves.

He told us that he could grow more if we needed more, but that Hometown Harvest played a very important role. Basically he said, "Let the farmers grow, and you stay focused on marketing and delivering the produce."

The reason that this conversation stood out is that while I understood we served a need to our customers, it was the first time that I realized we also served a need for our local farmers.

Best story while at work: This actually happened to me as a customer. I got a phone call on my cell at 2am one night from my delivery driver. He was calling to say he was dropping off my bags and discovered my cat outside on my porch yowling to get back in. She wouldn't let him leave!

Best story while at work: Tyler turned me on to worm composting! I hadn't ever heard of it and didn't believe that I could make it work and ew! worms are gross. But I was willing to try. I set up my own worm composting bin on my condo balcony, and I've managed to keep the little guys alive while significantly reducing my household waste. It's one small accomplishment that I am very proud of.

Best story while at work:I had only been working for Hometown Harvest for about two months, and one weekend I went swimming in the Potomac and was bitten by an otter. I had to receive stitches and had to call Tony the next morning at 5:30am to tell him that I couldn't walk and wouldn't be in to work. When I told him what happened, he said it sounded like I told him that I had been bitten by a dinosaur and he didn't believe me. It was very embarrassing because I didn't want to make a bad impression. But when Tony saw the pictures that morning he understood. And no one at work ever let me forget about my otter attack.
